KNOWLEDGE, ATITUDE AND PRACTICSES REGARDING TYPHOID FEVERPREVENTIONS AMONG RESIDENTS AGED 18-60 YEARS OF KALISIZO NORTH,KYOTERA DISTRRICT

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by salomonella enterica serotype typi. It is caused
by micro-organisms, transmitted by contaminated food and water. Its prevalence however
remains high among communities in Uganda especially Kalisizo North in Kyotera District.
The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding
the prevention of typhoid fever among residents of Kalisizo North, Kyotera District, Uganda.
Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective public health interventions.
A qualitative c ross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing stratified sampling followed
by random sampling to ensure representative participation from different subgroups within the
population. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire designed to capture information
on residents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to typhoid fever prevention.
The studies revealed that majority of respondents (57%) were aware of typhoid fever, its causes,
and preventive measures. However, there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding treatment
and vaccination. (82%) had good attitude towards typhoid prevention. Most respondents (53%)
believed that typhoid fever is preventable by engaging in various preventive practices.
In conclusion, while there is a high level of awareness and positive attitudes towards the
prevention of typhoid fever among residents, there is a need for more comprehensive education
on treatment options and vaccination to enhance the overall effectiveness of public health
interventions.
To address these findings, several recommendations are proposed. Public health education
programs should be enhanced to cover treatment options and the importance of vaccination.
Community outreach initiatives should be strengthened to reinforce the belief in the
preventability of typhoid fever and promote proactive health-seeking behaviors. Additionally,
improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, and encouraging consistent use
of water treatment methods and good hygiene practices, are essential. Healthcare workers should
receive additional training on the latest typhoid fever prevention and treatment protocols. Finally,
targeted vaccination campaigns should be implemented to increase coverage, especially in high-
risk areas.
